Portrait of Bastien Chanez

How I got here

I started coding in middle school, in C++, building games you could play in the terminal. Then small games on my Casio calculator.

In high school, the ISN option changed everything: a game heavily inspired by Dofus, isometric 2D, turn-based movement, spells and monsters to fight, in C++ and SFML. It earned me a perfect score at the French baccalauréat.

During my two-year degree (DUT), a roguelike in Java: a side-view platformer. During my bachelor's, a C++/SFML hide-and-seek game, for which I built my own engine (scene management), reusing much of what I'd done in high school. During my master's, done as an apprenticeship at Maincare, I moved from games to real business applications: a high-stakes e-health platform.

Since then, I've never stopped exploring: a Mario bot in Python (on-screen tile detection), a Minesweeper in Java to revisit the basics, coaching apps (habits, sport), then nutrition with Batchmeal.

With Batchmeal, I went too hard, too fast. I paused to train in depth, earning two craft certifications, then restarted from scratch to build a product that scales and stays maintainable.

I always worked alongside my studies: Super U, McDonald's, a fixed-term contract at Lamster. I'm dyslexic, so from an early age I had to work harder than others. What was a difficulty became my strength: I kept a capacity for work and a perseverance that make the difference today.

I left permanent employment so I'd no longer be held back: to keep learning, feed my curiosity, and choose projects where code quality matters as much as the deadline.
